Types of Zari Work in India

🥇

Real Zari

Actual gold or silver metal wire wrapped around a silk or cotton core thread. The most valuable and traditional form. Found on authentic Banarasi and Kanjivaram sarees. Does not tarnish.

Imitation Zari

Metallic polyester or cupro thread coated with gold or silver. Most common in commercial production. More affordable. May fade over many years but is washable and durable for daily use.

🏺

Antique Zari

Oxidised metallic thread giving a muted, vintage gold look instead of shiny bright gold. Very popular for designer wear and fusion fashion. Works beautifully on earthy tone fabrics.

🎨

Nakshi Zari

Intricate hand-drawn zari patterns — the most detailed and skilled form. Used on premium sarees and bridal lehengas. Each piece is unique and takes several artisans weeks to complete.

💛

Badla Work

Flat metal strips (badla) used instead of twisted wire, creating a more pronounced, raised metallic surface. Used on phulkari-inspired shawls and bridal dupattas for a bold texture effect.

🔮

Zardozi

Heavy metallic embroidery using thick gold/silver threads, combined with sequins, beads, and wire coils (sitara). Used on bridal blouses, lehenga borders, and occasion wear. Also called kalabattu work.

✦ FAQ

Zari Work FAQs

Zari work is a traditional Indian embroidery using metallic gold or silver threads woven or embroidered onto fabric. Types include real zari, imitation zari, antique zari, and nakshi zari — used on Banarasi sarees, bridal lehengas, and silk blouses.
Silk (Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Paithani) is traditional and works best — threads grip well and the sheen complements gold. Velvet, georgette, and dupion silk also work excellently. Heavy zari work is not recommended on lightweight chiffon.
Real zari uses actual gold or silver wire and carries a Certificate of Assay. It does not tarnish and retains long-term value. Imitation zari uses metallic polyester — cheaper, durable, washable, but may fade after many years.
