Saree length for tall ladies
Sarees are sold at fixed lengths: 5.5 m for a 6 yard saree, 6.5 m with a blouse piece, 8.25 m for a Nauvari. A tall wearer puts more cloth into the drop from waist to ankle and into each pleat, so a standard length can leave the pallu short. Three ways to get the extra:
- Drape the blouse piece. A 6.5 m saree used uncut gives more than our 6 m allowance; stitch the blouse from matching cloth.
- Buy an extra long saree. Check the length in metres in the listing.
- Choose a pre-stitched lehenga saree, whose pleats are sewn to your length.

Sarees for tall women: fabrics and borders
- Wide-border silk (Kanjivaram, Banarasi). A broad border sits at the hem and breaks the long line.
- Half-and-half saree. The colour change at the pleats adds width across the figure.
- Bold prints (Patola, Bandhani). Large repeats look in scale on a long drape.
- Pallu open over the arm. Shows more of the pallu than a pinned narrow pallu.
Fabrics with weight fall well on a long frame: Kanjivaram silk, Banarasi silk, Patola, Tussar silk, Heavy chanderi. What to skip: a standard-length saree with a tight pallu (the pallu can end above the hip); very fine chiffon with no border (little body or pattern across a long drape).
Tall girl in saree: the blouse and the look
A blouse with detail stops the drape from reading as one long line. Elbow or full sleeves, a high neck or a silk boat neck blouse, and work at the back from back neck blouse designs all add width. With a Kanjivaram saree, the cuts in Kanjivaram blouse designs carry the border onto the sleeve.
