Both modes save a 640 × 640 px square JPG on a white background, and WhatsApp then shows it inside a circle. For a full size profile photo with nothing trimmed, pick Full Size.
| Mode | What happens to your photo | What the WhatsApp circle hides | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perfect Circle | Scaled up until it covers the whole square, then centred. The longer side is trimmed: a tall phone photo loses some of its top and bottom, a wide one loses its left and right. | The four corners of the square, which are photo, not white. | A face or one person, centred |
| Full Size | Scaled down until the whole photo fits inside the square. Nothing is trimmed; the gap is filled with white (bars left and right for a tall photo, top and bottom for a wide one). | The four corners of the square. For a tall or wide photo, the rounded edge also clips the corners of the photo itself. | A group photo, a logo or a picture with text |
| Square photo | Both modes give the same file: the photo resized to 640 × 640, no trim, no white bars. | The four corners of the photo. | Anything already square |
Source: the tool’s own code (640 × 640, JPG quality 0.92, white fill), checked 16 Oct 2026. 640 × 640 is our choice for the tool, not a figure taken from WhatsApp.
Upload your photo, choose Perfect Circle or Full Size, and download the JPG.
In WhatsApp, open Settings and tap your name or photo at the top, then tap the camera icon on the photo.
Choose it from your gallery. If WhatsApp shows a crop box, leave it covering the whole square and tap Done.
If a face or a word sits in a corner and gets cut by the round frame, go back, switch mode, or start from a photo with more space around the subject.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Head or chin cut off | You used Perfect Circle on a tall photo. Switch to Full Size, or start from a photo with more space above the head. |
| White bars show in the circle | That is Full Size on a non-square photo. Switch to Perfect Circle if you want the photo edge to edge. |
| Text or a logo touches the edge | The round frame hides the square’s corners in both modes. Use Full Size and keep text in the middle of the picture. |
| DP looks blurry | The tool cannot add detail a small photo does not have. Start from the original camera photo, not a screenshot or a forwarded copy. |
A 640 × 640 px square JPG, in both modes (tool code, checked 16 Oct 2026). 640 × 640 is the size we chose for the tool; it is not a figure taken from WhatsApp. WhatsApp shows every profile photo inside a circle, so plan for the corners being hidden.
Pick Full Size. The tool shrinks the whole photo to fit inside the 640 × 640 square and fills the empty space with white, so nothing is cut from the saved file. WhatsApp still shows the DP in a circle, which hides the four corners of the square, so keep faces and text away from the corners.
The file is a 640 × 640 px JPG saved at quality 0.92 (tool code, checked 16 Oct 2026), so how sharp it looks depends on the photo you start from. Use the original camera photo rather than a screenshot or a forwarded copy. For a larger picture in 720p, 1080p or 4K, use the HD photo converter instead.
WhatsApp draws profile photos inside a round frame, so the corners of any square picture are hidden. Neither mode can change that. Perfect Circle fills the square edge to edge; Full Size keeps the whole photo with white bars.
