Instagram shows every DP inside a circle, so a square file is what to upload. We found no pixel size for profile pictures in Instagram’s Help Centre (checked 18 Oct 2026); the three sizes below are the tool’s own.

In both modes the circle hides the square’s four corners. If a chin or a word sits near an edge, switch mode or start from a photo with more space around the subject.
Instagram shows a profile picture inside a circle, so the file you upload should be square (1:1). We found no pixel size in Instagram's Help Centre (checked 18 Oct 2026), so this tool offers 320, 640 or 1080 px squares; 640 × 640 is its default.
Pick Full Size. The whole photo is shrunk to fit inside the square and the empty space is filled with white, so nothing is cut from the saved file. The circle still hides the four corners of the square, so keep faces and text away from them.
Pick Perfect Circle. The photo is enlarged until it covers the whole square and centred; the longer side is trimmed. Instagram then draws the circle over that square.
All three are square JPGs at quality 92 (tool code, checked 18 Oct 2026). 640 × 640 is the default; 1080 × 1080 keeps more detail if your photo has it; 320 × 320 gives the smallest file. A small or forwarded photo will not get sharper at 1080.
