HSN code for carpet by fibre: wool, cotton, silk and durries
Inside each heading, fibre and build pick the 8-digit line, so a woollen carpet can land in three headings. Hand-knotted wool is 5701 10 10. Woven wool is 5702 31 10 with pile and not made up, 5702 41 10 with pile and made up, and 5702 91 10 flat-woven and made up. Tufted wool is 5703 10 10. “Made up” (Section XI Note 7) covers pieces that are hemmed, edged or finished with a knotted fringe.
| Line | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 5701 10 10 | Knotted, of wool or fine animal hair: hand-made (other: 5701 10 90) |
| 5701 90 11 | Knotted, of cotton: hand-made (other: 5701 90 19) |

| 5705 00 21 | Durries, cotton |

| 5705 00 23 | Durries of wool |
| 5705 00 24 | Cotton durries of handloom, including chindi, cotton chenille, rag rug and printed durries, and druggets |

A durrie is 5705 00, and the last two digits follow the fibre: 21 cotton, 22 man-made fibres, 23 wool, 24 handloom cotton. The handloom line also names chindi, chenille, rag rug and printed durries. DGCIS groups these four under the label “Durries”; the GST portal lists the same codes without that label, so search by code, not by name.
For a blend, the fibre that predominates by weight decides the line (Section XI Note 2(A)); 5705 00 42 writes that test into its own name for handloom bath mats. On invoices and in GSTR-1 Table 12, a seller with aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore enters 4 digits (5703, 5705); above ₹5 crore, 6 digits (570310, 570500).
Carpet HSN code mistakes: 5701, 5702 or 5703?
A woollen carpet is 5701, 5702 or 5703 depending on how it is made: hand-knotted is 5701, woven or flat-woven 5702, tufted 5703. Some pages call 5703 10 10 the most common carpet line, a label that fits tufted wool and nothing else. Ask the supplier which it is.
Chapter 57 has a scope test of its own. Note 1 covers floor coverings in which textile is the exposed surface in use, so a PVC, rubber or plastic mat is not chapter 57; look up its material on the GST portal. Note 2 leaves out floor-covering underlays, and the tariff unit for chapter 57 lines is SQM (square metres), not pieces.
Rate tables online disagree. Some print 12% for knotted carpets, woollen tufted carpets or polypropylene mats; one prints a per-square-metre slab running from 5% to 18%. Schedule I S.No. 358 to 363 put the five headings at 5% with no value or area condition, and no chapter 57 heading appears in Schedule II. Durrie codes differ only in the last two digits: 5705 00 23 is wool, 5705 00 24 handloom cotton. If a supplier bill shows another rate or line, confirm it with your CA.
Carpet HSN code GST rate: what to enter on a listing
GST on carpets is 5% for headings 5701 to 5705, under Schedule I S.No. 358 to 362 of Notification 9/2025-IT(Rate), in force from 22 September 2025. S.No. 363 repeats 5% for coir mats and handloom durries. There is no ₹2,500 per-piece band as on chapter 63 made-ups such as blankets: a costly hand-knotted rug and a low-priced tufted mat take the same rate.
- Check how it is made: knotted, woven, tufted, felt or other. That gives the heading, 5701 to 5705.
- Read the fibre and pile on the supplier bill to pick the 8-digit line; enter 4 digits, or 6 if last year’s turnover was above ₹5 crore.
- Enter 5% GST; chapter 57 has no price band.
Worked case (illustration): a home-furnishing seller lists a hand-tufted wool rug, a cotton handloom durrie and a tufted polypropylene carpet mat with a latex backing. They are 5703 10 10, 5705 00 24 and 5703 30 20, each at 5%, so a mixed order needs three codes but one rate.
Checked against the GST portal master
On 2 Nov 2026 we downloaded headings 5701 to 5705 from the GST portal master, 145 lines, and read them against DGCIS chapter 57. Two differences came up. DGCIS keeps 5701 10 00 as one line where the portal splits it into 5701 10 10 hand-made and 10 90 other, and DGCIS labels the 5705 00 groups (carpets, durries, jute, mats) that the portal prints without labels.
