Fabric HSN code list: 8 digit lines for cotton, polyester, rayon, silk and knits
At 8 digits a fabric code adds finish and weight to the fibre: inside 5208 the 2x lines are bleached, 3x dyed and 5x printed cotton, and the last two digits name the cloth, such as 50 for cambric. The rows below are the lines a Meesho or Flipkart fabric seller is most likely to need, from the GST portal’s HSN master, read on 11 Oct 2026.
Polyester and rayon follow the same order, dyed lines first and printed lines after, so a printed rayon crepe is 5408 24 11 and a dyed one 5408 22 11. No named line for your cloth? Take the "other" line in the same finish group.

Weight, blend and weave: why fabric codes disagree
Woven cotton fabric splits on two tests: is it 85% or more cotton, and does it weigh more than 200 g/m²? Light cambric is 5208; heavier drill or denim is 5209. Once cotton falls below 85% and the rest is mainly man-made fibre, the same weights go to 5210 and 5211 (DGCIS chapter 52, checked 11 Oct 2026).
Georgette, chiffon and satin are mostly woven from polyester or nylon filament, so they fall in 5407, not in the cotton chapter. Check the fibre anyway: DGCIS chapter 54 has a "Nylon georgette" line under 5407 and a "Rayon georgette" line, 5408 22 14, under 5408.
The HSN code for rayon fabric is 5408 when it is woven from viscose filament yarn and 5516 when it is woven from rayon staple fibre, which covers most rayon slub and spun rayon prints. Both are 5% GST (Notification 9/2025, S.No. 342 and 348).
Knitted fabric is chapter 60, never chapter 52, whatever its fibre. Terry and other pile knits are 6001, lycra knit wider than 30 cm with 5% or more elastomeric yarn is 6004, warp knits are 6005, and plain hosiery not covered by those headings is 6006 (DGCIS ch. 60).
A code from another site that does not fit
The top Google result for "fabric hsn code" on 4 Oct 2026 listed 6307, made-up articles. 6307 is for finished articles; cloth sold by the metre stays in its fibre chapter. Chapter 63 does have a line for hand-printed dress materials, 6307 90, but plain cloth on a roll is not one of them.
Fabric HSN code and 5% GST on a Meesho or Flipkart catalog
- Find your fabric in the table above by weave (woven or knitted) and main fibre.
- Type 4 digits in the HSN box if your aggregate turnover last year was ₹5 crore or less, or 6 digits above ₹5 crore (CBIC Notification 78/2020–Central Tax, from 1 April 2021).
- Set GST to 5% for every fabric row above. Fabric is not on the ₹2,500-per-piece garment band; that band applies to stitched clothes (Notification 9/2025, Schedule I).
- Use the same code and rate on the tax invoice and in GSTR-1 Table 12.
Worked case from Surat: a supplier listing 2.5 m of printed cotton cambric enters HSN 5208 and GST 5%. The same supplier listing rayon slub fabric enters 5516 at 5%, and a polyester georgette enters 5407 at 5%.

Worked example: 5 metres of dyed rayon crepe
A Surat supplier lists a 5-metre cut of plain dyed rayon crepe for kurtis at ₹899. Rayon is an artificial filament, so the heading is 5408; the dyed group gives the 6-digit sub-heading 540822, and the named cloth gives the 8-digit line 5408 22 11, rayon crepe. A printed version of the same crepe would be 5408 24 11.
GST is 5% under Schedule I S.No. 342, and the ₹2,500 garment band does not apply because the cloth is not stitched. In the Meesho HSN field the supplier types 5408 (540822 above ₹5 crore turnover) and picks 5% in the GST field, whatever the price of the cut.
Sarees, dress material and fabric sold as a set
An unstitched saree is fabric for HSN, not a garment, so it takes its fibre heading. DGCIS chapter 52 has saree lines inside 5208 (for example 5208 11 20, "Saree"), and chapter 54 has "Polyester sarees" at 5407 52 40 and "Rayon sarees" at 5408 22 18. The saree HSN code page covers each fibre.
Unstitched suit pieces sold as a set are dress material. Hand-printed dress material sits under 6307 90 in chapter 63, so it has its own page (dress material HSN code). Denim sold by the metre is 5209 42 00; stitched jeans are covered on the jeans HSN code page.
