Clothes HSN code list: 6 digit and 8 digit lines for the most-sold garments
The 4-digit heading in the first table is the level most sellers file at; the 6-digit sub-heading adds the fibre, and the 8-digit line adds the exact garment. For cotton, the common 6-digit sub-headings are 6109 10 for T-shirts, 6105 10 for knitted men’s shirts, 6205 20 for woven men’s shirts, 6206 30 for woven women’s tops, 6204 42 for woven dresses and 6211 42 for women’s cotton kurta sets and other garments.
Below are the 8-digit lines for the garments that sell most on Meesho and Flipkart, taken from the GST portal HSN master. The rate never moves between them. Every row pays the same garment band, so picking a different line changes the description on your invoice, not the GST.

8-digit lines: GST portal HSN master (search), read 11 Oct 2026. GST: Notification 9/2025, from 22 Sep 2025.
Notice the handloom and Lucknow chikan splits under several cotton lines. They are newer than the 2017 tariff edition, which had single lines such as 6205 20 00, 6206 30 00 and 6211 42 10. The portal still lists those older lines, but a plain mill-made cotton piece now has its own "other" line. Use that one. For a garment not in this list, search the GST portal and match the 6-digit sub-heading before you look at 8 digits.
Clothes HSN code: knitted or woven is the first decision
Chapter 61 covers only made-up garments that are knitted or crocheted, and chapter 62 covers garments of textile fabric that is not knitted (DGCIS chapter notes, checked 11 Oct 2026). The same cotton shirt can be 6105 or 6205; the fabric, not the price, moves the code.
Labels rarely say knitted or woven. Ask your supplier to name the fabric on their purchase invoice, then carry the same heading on yours so the two match.
A saree or unstitched dress material is fabric, not a garment, so it does not sit in either chapter; it takes a fabric heading by fibre, covered on the saree HSN code and fabric HSN code pages.
Old rates still printed on other pages
Pages that quote a ₹1,000 limit are showing the rule from before 22 Sept 2025. The garment band is now 5% up to ₹2,500 a piece and 18% above (PIB factsheet, read 11 Oct 2026).
Which clothes HSN code and GST rate to enter on a Meesho catalog
- Pick the garment row in the first table, choosing the knitted or woven column after checking the fabric with your supplier.
- Enter 4 digits (for example 6109) in the HSN field if your aggregate turnover last year was up to ₹5 crore, and 6 digits if it was above (CBIC Notification 78/2020–Central Tax, in force 1 April 2021).
- Choose the GST rate by the sale value of one piece: 5% up to ₹2,500, 18% above it, judged on what that piece sells for on your invoice.
- Put the same code and rate on your tax invoice and in GSTR-1 Table 12 (GSTN advisory), so the listing, invoice and return match.
Worked case: a Meesho supplier lists a ₹399 cotton T-shirt, a ₹549 woven cotton kurti and a ₹3,200 party dress in one catalog. The T-shirt goes in as 6109 at 5%, the kurti as 6206 at 5%, and the woven dress as 6204 at 18%, because its sale value crosses ₹2,500 a piece.

Worked example: a ₹699 woven cotton shirt, checked against our HSN finder
Take a mill-made cotton formal shirt listed at ₹699. Our HSN finder’s “Men’s shirt — woven” row returns 6205, with the band “5% up to ₹2,500 a piece, 18% above”. From there it is a short walk down: cotton gives the sub-heading 620520, and since the shirt is neither handloom nor chikan work, the 8-digit line is 6205 20 90, the “other” line.
₹699 is under ₹2,500 a piece, so GST is 5%. In the Meesho catalog form the HSN field takes 6205 (620520 for a seller above ₹5 crore turnover) and the GST field takes 5%. Reprice it at ₹2,699 and only GST moves, to 18%.
Ladies clothes and readymade garments HSN code
There is no single HSN code for readymade garments; the garment type decides the heading inside chapter 61 or 62. "Readymade garments" is a trade phrase, not a tariff heading, so T-shirts file 6109 and men’s woven shirts 6205 (DGCIS, checked 11 Oct 2026).
Most ladies clothes sit in 6104, 6106 or 6114 when knitted and in 6204, 6206 or 6211 when woven. Heading 6204 covers women’s or girls’ suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, dresses, skirts and trousers that are woven; 6104 is the knitted twin. Tops, blouses and kurtis go to 6106 or 6206, and a cotton kurta and salwar set, with or without dupatta, has its own tariff line under 6211 42.
