Cotton dupatta HSN code: 8-digit lines
The cotton dupatta HSN code is 621490 at 6 digits; at 8 digits it is 6214 90 39 or 6214 90 59. DGCIS labels 6214 90 31 to 39 “Odhani, cotton”, the nearest the tariff gets to the word dupatta. 6214 90 59 is shawls, mufflers and the like of cotton. Both are cotton and both roll up to 6214, so the 4- and 6-digit entry does not change; pick one 8-digit line with your CA and keep it.
| Line | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 6214 90 21 / 22 / 29 | Chadars, cotton: grey / white bleached / other |
| 6214 90 31 / 32 | Odhani, cotton: grey / white bleached |
| 6214 90 39 | Odhani, cotton: other |
| 6214 90 41 / 49 | Scarves of cotton: Lucknow chikan / other |
| 6214 90 51 | Shawls, mufflers and the like, of cotton: Lucknow chikan |
| 6214 90 59 | Shawls, mufflers and the like, of cotton: other |
Source: GST portal HSN master, heading 6214, and DGCIS chapter 62 for the “Chadars” and “Odhani” labels, read 2 Nov 2026. Last verified: 2 Nov 2026.
The GST portal shows 6214 90 31, 32 and 39 only as “GREY”, “WHITE BLEACHED” and “OTHER”. The “Odhani, cotton” label sits in the DGCIS chapter 62 schedule, so a portal search for dupatta or odhani finds nothing.
A georgette or chiffon dupatta in polyester is 6214 30 90; in rayon or viscose, 6214 40 90. A silk dupatta longer than 60 cm is 6214 10 20. A cotton-polyester blend goes by the fibre that weighs more (Section XI Note 2(A)).
Table 12 of GSTR-1 asks for at least 4 digits (6214) if aggregate turnover was up to ₹5 crore, and at least 6 (621490 for cotton) above that.
Dupatta HSN code mistakes: fabric codes and suit lines
5208 is not the HSN code for a finished dupatta: once it is hemmed, has rolled edges or a knotted fringe, it is “made up” under Section XI Note 7, and Note 8(a) takes it out of the fabric chapters. Some sites print 5208, 5007 or 5407 for dupattas; those headings fit unhemmed dupatta fabric sold by the metre, covered on the fabric HSN code page.
The other copied line is 6211 42 10, “kurta and salwar with or without duppatta”. It is a set line, now split into 6211 42 11 and 6211 42 19, and it is the only portal line that spells the word. A dupatta sold on its own does not belong there; the set is on the suit HSN code page. Some pages also print 96109052, which is not a 6214 line.
Heading 6217 covers clothing accessories “for articles of apparel” and parts of garments, with no veil or scarf wording, so it is not a dupatta heading. A square scarf with no side over 60 cm is a handkerchief of 6213 (chapter 62 Note 7); a dupatta is longer. Shawls and stoles share heading 6214 (a wool shawl is 6214 20 10).
Older pages still show 12% and a ₹1,000 cut-off; both were replaced on 22 September 2025.
GST rate on dupatta and what to enter on a listing
A dupatta pays 5% GST when it sells for up to ₹2,500 a piece and 18% when it sells for more, the rule since 22 September 2025 (Notification 9/2025-IT(Rate), PIB factsheet). The band applies to apparel and clothing accessories of chapters 61 and 62, and 6214 is a chapter 62 heading. The value that counts is the transaction value, not the printed MRP (CBIC GST rates FAQ).
- Note fibre and construction: woven cotton, synthetic, silk, or knitted.
- Type 6214 into the HSN field of the listing (6 digits, such as 621490, if turnover passed ₹5 crore).
- Choose the rate from the selling price of one dupatta: up to ₹2,500 is 5%, more is 18%.
Example with illustrative prices (not market data): a printed cotton dupatta listed at ₹349 goes in as 6214, or 621490, and pays 5% because it is below ₹2,500. A Banarasi silk dupatta at ₹3,200 is 621410 and crosses the limit, so 18%.
Checked against the GST portal master
Our check, 2 Nov 2026: the GST portal master for headings 6117, 6211, 6214 and 6217 comes to 116 lines. Searching them for dupatta, chunni, odhani and stole returned a single hit, 6211 42 10, where the set line spells it “duppatta”. “Odhani” exists only in the DGCIS schedule, not on the portal.
