Mens kurta HSN code: 8-digit lines by fabric
For a men’s cotton kurta the 8-digit choice is 6205 20 90 (6205 20 20 if embroidered with Lucknow chikan, 6205 20 10 if handloom) or 6211 32 00. That also answers “cotton kurta HSN code”: both lines are cotton, woven. Heading 6205 is men’s or boys’ shirts; 6211 is other garments. Neither names a kurta, so pick the one your CA agrees with and keep it.
| Line | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 6205 20 10 | Men’s shirts of cotton: handloom |
| 6205 20 20 | Men’s shirts of cotton: embroidered with Lucknow chikan craft |

| 6205 30 10 | Men’s shirts of man-made fibres: Lucknow chikan |

| 6205 90 11 | Men’s shirts of other textile materials: Khadi |

| 6211 39 11 / 39 19 | Other garments, men’s or boys’, other textile materials: handloom / other |
Source: GST portal HSN master, headings 6205 and 6211, and DGCIS chapter 62, read 30 Oct 2026. Last verified: 30 Oct 2026.
Woven or knitted decides the chapter: chapter 62 is for garments not knitted, chapter 61 for knitted ones, so a jersey kurta moves to 6105 10 or 6114 20 00. A cotton-polyester blend goes by the fibre that weighs more (Section XI Note 2(A)).
On the invoice, sellers with turnover up to ₹5 crore last year write 4 digits (6205, 6211, 6203); above ₹5 crore, 6 digits (620520, 621132, 620322), under CBIC Notification 78/2020-Central Tax.
Kurta pajama HSN code: when the set is an ensemble
A kurta pajama set is 6203 22 00 when both pieces are cotton, cut from identical fabric and put up for retail sale as one set; in synthetic fabric it is 6203 23 00. That is the “ensemble” of chapter 62 Note 3(b): one garment for the upper body and one or two for the lower body, made up in identical fabric. The note leaves out articles of heading 6207.
That exclusion matters for sleepwear. A pajama set sold as nightwear is heading 6207, nightshirts and pyjamas: 6207 21 for cotton, 6207 22 00 for man-made fibres. List it as nightwear and the ensemble lines do not apply.
A kurta in one fabric with a contrast pajama in another does not meet the identical-fabric wording, so each piece takes its own line: the kurta from the table above, the pajama as trousers under 6203 42 (see the pant HSN code page). Confirm that split with your CA. Some sites print 6203 19 10 or 6203 12 00 for every kurta pajama, or 6203 29 00 for a cotton set; for a matching cotton set the ensemble line is 6203 22 00.
Kurta HSN code mistakes: 6211 42 10 is a women’s line
6211 42 10 is not a men’s kurta code: it sits under women’s or girls’ garments of cotton and reads “kurta and salwar with or without dupatta”. It is the only tariff line that uses the word kurta, which is why search results copy it for men’s kurtas. The portal now splits it into 6211 42 11 (Lucknow chikan) and 6211 42 19 (other).
Other pages print 6204, a women’s heading, for “readymade kurtas”. Some still show 12% with a ₹1,000 limit, the rule before 22 September 2025; the band is now ₹2,500 a piece. Women’s kurti tops sold alone are on the kurti HSN code page.
GST rate on kurta and what to enter on a listing
GST on a kurta is 5% if the sale value is up to ₹2,500 a piece and 18% above, from 22 September 2025 (Notification 9/2025-IT(Rate), PIB factsheet). Sale value means the transaction value, not the MRP: CBIC’s GST rates FAQ says so, written when the band was ₹1,000.
- Check how the kurta is made and sold: woven or knitted, alone or as a matching set.
- Pick the row and enter the 4-digit heading in the listing’s HSN field (6 digits if last year’s turnover was above ₹5 crore).
- Set GST by sale value a piece: 5% up to ₹2,500, 18% above.
Worked case (illustration): a menswear seller lists a woven cotton kurta at ₹899 (an illustrative price, not market data). It takes 6205 or 6211 on the invoice. ₹899 is under ₹2,500, so the rate is 5%.
Checked against the GST portal master
On 30 Oct 2026 we dumped headings 6103, 6105, 6114, 6203, 6205, 6207 and 6211 from the GST portal master, 183 lines in all, and searched them for “kurta”. One line matched, 6211 42 10, the women’s cotton kurta and salwar line. That single match is why this page gives men’s headings by fabric instead of a kurta code.
