Speed Post Charges Calculator

Speed Post is the one Indian courier whose tariff is published, not negotiated. That single fact changes how a seller should use it.

Speed Post is priced from India Post’s published tariff, by weight slab and distance band, and the same rate applies to everyone at every post office — no contract, no volume tier. Read the current tariff on indiapost.gov.in, and work out below which weight slab your parcel lands in first.

What decides which Speed Post slab you land in?

Speed Post is priced off a grid: weight slab down one axis, distance band across the other. Finding your cell needs both, and the weight half is where parcels go wrong.

India Post, like every carrier in the country, charges on the greater of two figures. One is what the article weighs on a scale. The other is what its size implies — length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 5000, read as kilograms. Post a 300 grams garment in a generous carton that bills as 800 grams, and the carton has set the slab.

This parcel is billed on its size, not its weight. Packing it smaller and flatter is the cheapest way to cut the bill — nothing about the goods has to change.

India Post Speed Post rate slabs are not loaded yet

The chargeable-weight figure above is correct and is the same for every courier in India. The rupee amount is not shown because we will not publish a rate we have not verified against a current rate card — you would price shipping against it. Check your own India Post Speed Post rate card, or work the margin out with the break-even calculator.

With that number, the tariff row is unambiguous. Without it, sellers read the row their scale suggested and are then surprised at the counter.

What sets Speed Post apart from the other three carriers on this site is what happens next. It is a government service with a tariff notified publicly, uniform across the country, identical for a first-time sender and for a business posting 100 orders a week. Nobody is getting a better rate than you are.

Checking the official tariff therefore answers the question completely, which is untrue of every private courier. For DTDC, Blue Dart or Delhivery the published figure is a starting point that a contract overrides. Here it is the figure.

Reach is the second difference. India Post delivers to nearly every pincode in the country, including the ones private networks surcharge as out-of-delivery-area or decline outright. For a seller taking orders from small towns and hill districts, that gap is often the difference between fulfilling an order and cancelling it.

How the published India Post Speed Post tariff differs from private courier contract pricing
One published tariff for everybody, against four private rate cards you have to negotiate.

Where does the post office beat a private courier?

Two situations, and they have almost nothing in common.

The first is the difficult address. A pincode comes back unserviceable on an aggregator, or serviceable only with a surcharge that eats the order — and the post office will take it at the ordinary tariff. Ship nationally for long enough and this arrives often enough that a Speed Post fallback is worth setting up before it is needed, not after an order is stuck.

The second is the seller without volume yet. Aggregator pricing rewards scale, and a boutique sending 4 orders a day sits at the wrong end of that. A published tariff does not care how many you send, which occasionally makes it the cheapest option for a shop sending 100 orders a month and rarely the cheapest for one sending 3,000.

Speed guarantees are where it fits badly. This is not a premium air product and does not behave like one; a buyer who needs delivery in a metro tomorrow needs a different service. Nor is there a seller dashboard in the sense a marketplace seller expects, so bulk booking and label printing stay manual work that private networks have automated away.

Where do you read the current Speed Post tariff?

Go to indiapost.gov.in and find your weight slab and distance band. Confirm the slab against the calculator above first — a tariff row is only useful once you know which one you are in, and the volumetric rule decides that.

Booking happens at any post office counter with the packed article and the destination pincode. There is no account to open. Value Payable Post covers cash on delivery if you need it, carrying its own commission on the amount collected.

Since the tariff is public and revised by official notification, it is one of the few shipping figures worth bookmarking. Go to the source, not a third-party summary; summaries go stale and rarely admit when they were last checked.

Not published here yet. Rate cards change and differ by contract, so a table assembled from memory would be wrong for most readers within a quarter. Read yours from your India Post Speed Post account or aggregator dashboard.

What does the postage not cover?

Value Payable Post is the cash-on-delivery equivalent, and its commission on the collected amount sits outside the postage. Remittance reaches you after delivery and after the money has travelled back through the postal system — a longer lag than a private aggregator’s COD cycle, often a matter of weeks, and something to plan around if you restock out of collected cash.

Insurance and acknowledgement-of-delivery are optional add-ons, each priced separately. Registered parcel and ordinary parcel are different, cheaper, slower services; they are not Speed Post and should not be costed as though they were.

A return still costs both legs here, exactly as anywhere else — on a ₹600 order that is most of the margin gone. Before deciding a shipping charge is affordable, cost the whole order — goods, packing, postage, the return share and any commission. The break-even price calculator takes all of them, and the prepaid vs COD calculator shows what the payment mode alone changes.

Reaching a difficult pincode is the last step, not the first

An order that reaches a hill-district pincode had to be listed before it could be posted — photographed on a clean background, cut to each portal's size rules, described so a search picks it up. That is the evening.

Why does this page send you to indiapost.gov.in?

Because the government already publishes it, and better than anyone repeating it can. India Post notifies its tariff officially and revises it the same way, so a copy made here would be a copy that ages silently while the source stays right.

That is the opposite of the situation on the other three carrier pages. Those rates are contract data that genuinely differ per seller and cannot be published by anybody. This rate can be published, is published, and the publisher is one click away.

What this page adds instead is the part the tariff assumes you already know: which slab your parcel falls in, and what sits outside the postage. Take the weight figure above to the tariff table and the two together give you a complete answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Speed Post charges calculated?

By weight slab and distance band, from India Post's published tariff. The slab is decided by chargeable weight — the greater of scale weight and volumetric weight (L × W × H in cm ÷ 5000, read as kg) — so settle that before reading the tariff row.

Is Speed Post cheaper than private courier?

Sometimes, and it turns mostly on your volume. Private courier rates fall as you ship more; the Speed Post tariff does not move at all. That makes it competitive for a seller sending a handful of parcels a day and usually uncompetitive for one sending hundreds.

Does Speed Post deliver to every pincode in India?

India Post reaches nearly every pincode in the country, including many that private networks either surcharge as out-of-delivery-area or decline. That reach is the main reason sellers keep a Speed Post option open even when most orders go privately.

Does Speed Post do cash on delivery?

Through Value Payable Post, which collects from the addressee and remits to you. It carries a commission separate from the postage, and the remittance takes longer to arrive than a private aggregator's COD cycle — plan for that if you restock from collected cash.

Where do I find the current Speed Post rate?

On indiapost.gov.in. It is one of the few Indian shipping figures that is genuinely public and uniform, so the official source answers the question completely, not approximately. Third-party summaries go stale and rarely say when they were checked.

How fast is Speed Post compared with Blue Dart?

Slower, and it is not sold as a guaranteed-time product. Blue Dart runs a dedicated air network and prices accordingly. If a buyer needs next-day delivery in a metro, that is what an air service is for; for everything else the gap matters less than the cost difference.

The Speed Post tariff is published by India Post, not here. It is uniform for every sender and revised by official notification, so read it at the source. The chargeable-weight calculator above tells you which row of it applies to your parcel.
