How to make a passport size photo under 100KB
- Crop first. Open the passport size photo maker and pick the 3.5 × 4.5 cm preset; it saves a white-background JPG at 413 × 531 px (300 DPI).
- Add that JPG to the compressor above. Keep 80 KB, or type the lower cap your form prints.
- Press Compress & Download. The download is named after your target, for example 80kb-photo.jpg.
- Check the result line: it gives the pixels and the exact bytes, so you can see the file is under 100,000 bytes before you upload it.

For the Indian passport itself, read the photo rules on Passport Seva for your application type. The one Passport Seva photo guideline we could open is for children under 4: 45 mm × 35 mm (the same 3.5 × 4.5 cm shape), white background, face 80–85% of the photo, and no KB figure. So this page gives no KB or pixel size for the passport itself (guideline read 23 Oct 2026, link re-checked 24 Oct 2026). A police clearance or job form that asks for a “passport size photo” prints its own size and KB; use those.
Passport photo above 100 KB? Problems and fixes
The form says “file too large” although the tool said 100 KB
Until 24 Oct 2026 this tool counted a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes, so a 100 KB target could save 102,270 bytes, over a cap counted in 1,000s. It now stops at the target × 1,000 bytes: 100 KB gave 99,017 bytes on our test. Run the photo again.
The photo came out smaller in pixels than I expected
Pixels drop only when JPEG quality alone cannot reach the target. At 10 KB our 3024 × 4032 phone photo came down to 824 × 1099. Cropping to passport size first leaves fewer pixels to squeeze, so more detail survives.
The form also has a minimum, such as 10 KB
Do not type the minimum: with 10 typed, our photo saved 9,929 bytes, just under a 10 KB floor. Keep 80 KB for a 10–100 KB form, and read the bytes in the result line before uploading.
