By StitchMagic team · Last checked and updated 23 October 2026

Eight small business ideas in India you can start online from home: sell on Meesho as a supplier, sell on Flipkart, sell on Amazon.in with Easy Ship, resell stock from a wholesale cloth market, dropship as a Meesho supplier, sell clothes on WhatsApp and Instagram, sell handmade products, and sell artificial jewellery. Each comes with a first step you can take this week and the official page behind it where one exists, checked 22 Oct 2026.

Each with its official first step and the free tool for the next job.

How each small business idea in India goes from sourcing to selling online
Source, list, ship, get paid, for each of the 8 ideas. Sources: supplier.meesho.com and sell.amazon.in.

How we chose these small business ideas

Each idea had to pass three tests: you can start it from home, it sells online in India, and every figure in its entry comes from an official page with a date. Where a channel has an official sign-up page, the entry links it; where it has none (WhatsApp, a wholesale market), the first step is one you can take yourself. We checked those pages between 3 and 22 Oct 2026.

That rules out food businesses, tuition and freelancing here: we found no official first step to cite, and the start-up budgets other lists print for them are unsourced and disagree.

A disclosure: StitchMagic makes ListMagic and free seller tools. No entry is our product; the tools we link are for the job that comes after the first step. More guides: tools for marketplace sellers.

Before you start: GST, Udyam and PAN

Udyam registration is free and fully online: the portal says “Registration Process is totally free” and “Only Adhaar Number will be enough for registration” (udyamregistration.gov.in, checked 22 Oct 2026). The form runs Aadhaar verification, then PAN verification, then your basic details, address and unit. Since 1 April 2021 it also needs a PAN, and a GSTIN where the GST law applies to you.

A business is micro on the Udyam portal if investment is not above ₹2.5 crore and turnover not above ₹10 crore (Udyam portal, checked 22 Oct 2026). Our Udyam registration guide walks through each screen.

GST is the question that decides your channel. Meesho accepts sellers without a regular GSTIN through an Enrolment ID / UIN (supplier.meesho.com, 3 Oct 2026). Whether you must register for GST at all depends on your turnover and what you sell; we do not print a threshold here because the sources we read disagree, so check it on gst.gov.in.

Small business ideas compared

Meesho and Amazon Karigar are the two channels here whose own pages state a commission: 0% on every Meesho category, and 8% or less by category on Karigar (Meesho, 3 Oct 2026; Amazon, 22 Oct 2026). Elsewhere the charge cell sends you to the platform's fee page.

8 online business ideas you can start from home

Same five lines per idea; a dash means the platform's own page gave us nothing to quote.

1. Sell on Meesho as a supplier

Yes, you can start selling online in India without a regular GSTIN on Meesho: its supplier site says “Don't have a GSTIN? You can still sell on Meesho”, and sign-up asks for an active bank account plus a GSTIN or, for non-GST sellers, an Enrolment ID / UIN (supplier.meesho.com, loaded 3 Oct 2026). Meesho also states a 0% commission on every product category.

Best for
A first online shop with no GSTIN yet, selling clothes, jewellery or home goods.
First step
Register on the Meesho supplier site with your bank account and GSTIN or Enrolment ID.
What the platform charges, per its own page
“0% commission rate on all product categories”; payment reaches your bank on the 7th day from delivery, Cash on Delivery orders included (Meesho, 3 Oct 2026).

2. Sell on Flipkart

You register as a Flipkart seller on Flipkart's own seller pages, and our Flipkart hub walks through them. We have not recorded Flipkart's fees or document list in our fact ledger for this page, so this entry points you there instead of printing a figure we cannot date.

Best for
Sellers already listing on one marketplace who want a second channel for the same stock.
First step
Read the registration steps on our Flipkart seller hub, then sign up on Flipkart's own seller site.
What the platform charges, per its own page
— (check Flipkart's fee page before you price).

Flipkart commission calculator.

3. Sell on Amazon.in with Easy Ship pickup

Amazon.in gives a home seller three ways to deliver: FBA, where Amazon stores, packs and delivers; Easy Ship, where you store and pack and an Amazon agent delivers; and Self-Ship, where you deliver through your own or a third-party carrier (sell.amazon.in, retrieved 4 Oct 2026). With Easy Ship, orders are picked up from your location by an Amazon Logistics delivery associate.

Best for
Sellers who pack at home and want Amazon Logistics to collect from them.
First step
Read the Easy Ship page on sell.amazon.in, then register on Amazon.in.
What the platform charges, per its own page
— (Amazon's fee page lists the fees by category).
Next StitchMagic tool
Amazon seller calculator; Amazon label crop for the Easy Ship label.

4. Buy from a wholesale cloth market and resell online

Reselling wholesale stock works when the price per piece leaves room after the marketplace's charges and shipping, so do that sum before you buy, not after. We do not print shop names, prices or minimum order quantities for any market: they change by shop and season, and a figure we cannot source would mislead you.

Best for
Sellers near Surat, Delhi or another cloth market who can visit and inspect stock.
First step
Visit the market and use a target price per piece, worked out with the price-per-piece guide, to bargain.
What the platform charges, per its own page
— (depends on the channel you resell on).
Next StitchMagic tool
Wholesale margin calculator.

5. Dropship as a Meesho supplier

Dropshipping on Meesho usually means you list a product as a supplier while a partner who holds the stock packs and ships it, so you start without buying inventory; our dropshipping guide covers the set-up. You still register as a Meesho supplier with a bank account and a GSTIN or Enrolment ID, and Meesho's 0% commission applies to you as to any supplier (Meesho, 3 Oct 2026).

Best for
Sellers with a reliable stock partner and no space to store goods.
First step
Register on the Meesho supplier site, then agree packing and dispatch times with your partner.
What the platform charges, per its own page
0% commission, as for any Meesho supplier.
Next StitchMagic tool
Meesho commission calculator.

6. Sell clothes on WhatsApp and Instagram from home

Selling on WhatsApp and Instagram needs no marketplace sign-up, but you take the order, collect the money and book the courier yourself. Your first step is a catalogue your buyers can scroll, and your second is a courier that will collect from home.

Best for
Sellers with an existing circle of buyers, or a boutique moving online.
First step
Set up a WhatsApp catalogue, then use our courier pickup from home guide to book collections.
What the platform charges, per its own page
— (no platform commission named; you pay the courier).
Next StitchMagic tool
Catalog maker for product cards to share.

7. Sell handmade products and handicrafts online

Handmade sellers have one official marketplace door of their own: Amazon Karigar, for individual artisans, weavers, cooperatives and NGOs whose products “should not be machine made” (sell.amazon.in, checked 22 Oct 2026). Joining is “without any additional cost”, it is for new sellers registering directly with the programme, and its reduced referral fee is 8% or less depending on the category.

Best for
Artisans and weaver groups selling their own work.
First step
Use the “Apply Now” form on the Amazon Karigar page.
What the platform charges, per its own page
Referral fee 8% or less by category, on Karigar (Amazon, 22 Oct 2026).
Next StitchMagic tool
Amazon seller calculator.

8. Sell artificial jewellery on WhatsApp

Artificial jewellery is small and light: it fits a courier flyer and a phone photo, which suits a WhatsApp seller starting from home. Put the right HSN code on your invoice from day one: imitation jewellery has its own code, and the GST rate follows it.

Best for
Sellers who can buy in small lots and shoot clean product photos at home.
First step
Look up the code on our artificial jewellery HSN page before your first invoice.
What the platform charges, per its own page
— (no platform commission on WhatsApp; Meesho states 0% if you list there).
Next StitchMagic tool
HSN code finder.

How to choose a small business idea

Pick the idea whose first step you can take this week, by answering three questions in order. What can you source at a good price: wholesale cloth, your own handmade work, or a partner's stock? Where do your buyers already shop: Meesho, Amazon.in, or your WhatsApp contacts? Which channel's rules do you meet today?

The third question is often GST. Without a GSTIN, Meesho is open to you through an Enrolment ID; Amazon.in, by its own registration guide, takes sellers without one only for GST-exempt goods such as books (checked 22 Oct 2026). A student with a phone and a bank account can start on WhatsApp or as a Meesho supplier this week; a weaver group with handmade stock has Karigar.

Skip any list that promises a profit: no official page we read gives one, and your margin is a sum you do with the calculators above.
