Wholesale in India: categories, markets and what to check

Wholesale means buying goods in volume from a maker or trader in order to resell them, and the checks that matter change with the product. Power banks sit on BIS’s registration schedule, shoes need an ISI mark, and garment GST depends on price per piece (BIS, PIB). Pick a category below.

Each card links to a page with its own dated sources: the BIS CRS list, the BIS footwear circular, the GST portal HSN master and Notification 9/2025, with the date each was read on that page. Last checked: 22 Oct 2026.

Wholesale products by category: what changes before you buy

Electronics, lights, footwear and toys: a BIS check first

Two categories hinge on BIS’s Compulsory Registration Scheme. Power banks, power adaptors (chargers), wireless earphones, Bluetooth speakers: registered; phone covers, tempered glass: not. Details: mobile accessories wholesale. Diwali and Christmas string lights count as "LED Lighting Chains": wholesale home decor.

Shoes and chappals answer to two Quality Control Orders, effective 1 August 2024, plus a tax band by pair value; IS numbers per type: footwear wholesalers. Toys follow IS 9873 when non-electric, IS 15644:2006 when electric: wholesale toys.

Home and kitchen: material and fabric decide the code

Kitchenware material fixes its HSN heading, while BIS names certain products outright: domestic pressure cookers, aluminium utensils, insulated food containers. See wholesale kitchen items. Bed linen sits in heading 6302, split by fabric and print, taxed 5% up to ₹2,500 a piece, 18% above (Notification 9/2025): bedsheet wholesale.

Clothing: HSN line by garment, GST by price per piece

Readymade garments pay 5% GST up to ₹2,500 a piece and 18% above, from 22 Sept 2025 (PIB). Garments differ by tariff line and origin checks. Sarees differ further: billed as fabric, by fibre, with registered GI sarees traced to home states. Kurtis split by craft and size run; salwar suits bill as one set.

Mens clothing spreads t-shirts, shirts and jeans over three headings. Kids clothing depends on a child’s height, not tag age. Nighty material splits into cloth by metre versus finished nighties; Kutch work dress material, sold as unstitched sets, carries craft labels checkable on India’s GI register.

Wholesale market in India: cloth markets by city

For cloth, your wholesale market depends on fabric and garment, so five cities get pages of their own: Delhi, Surat, Kolkata, Jaipur, Ludhiana. Each covers its specialities and checks. Starting from your own location? Open wholesale markets near me.

Wholesale retail meaning: what is the difference

Wholesale sells goods in volume to businesses that resell; retail sells a few pieces to whoever uses them. Wholesalers earn thin margins across many units, retailers wider margins on fewer. Wholesale quotes are per unit at some minimum quantity, which sellers expect you to commit to.

Online sellers usually play both roles: wholesale buyers upstream, retailers to Meesho or Amazon.in customers downstream. Hence these checks come before money moves: your eventual listing carries that product, its code, its tax rate.

Wholesale price: how to check a quote

Compare wholesale quotes after adding GST at each product’s own rate, freight and marketplace fees. We print no wholesale price list: rates change by supplier, and we cannot date one. Run each quote through our wholesale margin calculator instead.

Worked example (illustrative prices): two kurtis either side of ₹2,500

Readymade garments show why rates matter. A kurti invoiced at ₹2,400 falls in 5%: ₹120 GST. One at ₹2,600 crosses ₹2,500 per piece: 18%, ₹468 (PIB, from 22 Sept 2025). Match each invoice line’s rate to its price band; whether that GST becomes input tax credit is your accountant’s call.

Wholesale business: Udyam registration for traders

Wholesale traders can register on Udyam, but only for priority sector lending: an MSME Ministry Office Memorandum dated 2 July 2021 included retail and wholesale trade as MSMEs "for the limited purpose of Priority Sector Lending" (RBI FAQ on MSMEs, checked 22 Oct 2026). Steps: our Udyam registration guide.

Udyam never replaces GST registration; that runs separately. Supplier invoices carry HSN lines, and your listings need them too, so every category page gives lines for its products.

Wholesale questions

What does wholesale mean?

Wholesale is buying goods in volume from a maker or trader in order to resell them. The buyer is a business, not the end user.

What is the difference between wholesale and retail?

Wholesale sells in volume to businesses that resell; retail sells a few pieces to the person who uses them. An online seller usually does both.

Is there a wholesale price list?

No list holds for long; rates differ by supplier, so check each quote with GST added. On readymade garments, GST alone jumps from 5% to 18% above ₹2,500 a piece.

Where is the wholesale market for clothes?

It depends on the garment; our city pages cover Delhi, Surat, Kolkata, Jaipur and Ludhiana.

Can a wholesale trader register on Udyam?

Yes, since the MSME Office Memorandum of 2 July 2021, but the registration counts for priority sector lending alone (RBI FAQ, checked 22 Oct 2026).

Which wholesale goods need BIS certification?

Listed products, such as power banks and wireless earphones, LED lighting chains, the footwear in the 2024 orders and toys. Each category page names the standard.
